Only one week to go!
Don't Wait! Register Today!
Libertarian Party 2014 National Convention
A detailed schedule of events is now up on the convention website! If you've been waiting for this and you haven't yet purchased a package, please review this schedule and then go to the registration page to make your purchases today.
My colleague Kevin Knedler (LPOH chair) has said this convention has no "sizzle" in the business sessions because it's a non-presidential convention. Unfortunately, we cannot afford the likes of John Stossel. But we do have some pretty big names, and there is plenty of sizzle with the lineup of speakers and entertainers, many of whom have never been to an LP convention. It is packed with a terrific lineup for the Reception, the Breakfasts and Lunches, and the Grand Banquet, as well as the Breakouts!
You will have a wonderful time and will not be disappointed. Don't delay: Register Today!
We must give the Hyatt accurate meal counts by Monday, June 23. After that date, we cannot guarantee the availability of tickets to the meals. Also, by registering online ahead of time, your on-site registration/check-in process will run more smoothly, as your pre-printed name badge and materials will be waiting for you.
There are still some guest rooms for us at the Hyatt, mostly for Friday and Saturday, but a few on Thursday night, and possibly Wednesday and Sunday. A small number of cancellations have freed up more rooms, but they get snatched up quickly. The Passkey reservation system will close on June 23. Reserve your space by following the link here.
As part of the hotel contract we got a few upgraded suites at the standard $119 rate. There is one "VIP Suite" (the Hyatt's designation) available for Wednesday through Saturday nights (check-out Sunday). This suite is 1,352 square feet (4x a standard room) with three large bays, including a living room area, a dining area with a half-bath, and a king bedroom with a large master bath. A connecting bedroom could be reserved at the $119 rate. We are requiring that you take the suite for all four nights, pay the $119/night directly to the Hyatt as usual, but make an additional payment of $600 directly to the LNC right away. Contact me to make the arrangements. If you already have a reservation, I can transfer this suite to your name with the hotel.
And don't forget to check out the Roomshare/Rideshare Facebook page from here.
This will be a fantastic convention!
See you soon!

Libertarian Party opposes further intervention in Iraq

In February 2003, the Libertarian Party (LP) issued an article titled "10 reasons why the USA should not attack Iraq."

The article began by saying, "...there's only one valid reason for the United States to go to war: Self-defense."

Geoffrey Neale, LP national chairman, commented, "Unfortunately, the U.S. government ignored that principle, and engaged in 'preventive war' against Iraq. Many times since then, the Libertarian Party has criticized that decision."

Neale also served as the LP national chairman in 2003.

In retrospect, the LP greatly understated the problems. We guessed the war might cost as much as $200 billion. It turned out to be closer to $1 trillion. We suspected that Saddam Hussein would not use his WMDs against the U.S. It turned out, he didn't have the weapons at all. And we failed to predict the hardship that U.S. military action would impose on millions of Iraqis.

We are now seeing the predictable result of the intervention: civil war in Iraq.

The U.S. government's war on Iraq has worsened the lives of both Americans and Iraqis.

What should the U.S. military do now? Nothing. No air strikes, no drone attacks, no "military advisors." There is no way to un-make the damage, and further intervention will only prolong and aggravate the current problems.

There is one thing our government could do: allow Iraqi refugees to immigrate to the United States.

The Libertarian Party supports a foreign policy of free trade and non-intervention.

The original 2003 article is available here.

Florida U.S. House candidate polling ahead of Democratic challenger
Ray Netherwood
Ray Netherwood
Ray Netherwood, the U.S. House candidate for Florida's 19th congressional district, is polling ahead of the Democrat candidate for the June 24 special election, according to Vote USA.
Netherwood is polling at 13 percent, Republican challenger Curt Clawson is at 26 percent, the Democrat April Freeman is at 12 percent, and 41 percent are undecided.
The special election is being held to fill the seat vacated by former Rep. Trey Radel (R).
Netherwood is also on the ballot for the same race in the November general election.
"In mid-terms, many people stay home," Netherwood said. "Libertarians need to motivate those voters who are apathetic about their parties with the lure of 'principles' and NOT voting the party line over and over if they want something different!"

Libertarian Party 2014 National Convention
From the Washington Times, June 13:
The three-day Libertarian Convention begins June 26 in Columbus, Ohio. It is a cavalcade of all-Libertarian stars that includes 25 speakers, splashy receptions, caucus meetings, strategy sessions, cocktail hours, entertainment and the "Grand Banquet" featuring former presidential hopeful Gary Johnson, his vice presidential running mate Judge Jim Gray and Kmele Foster, co-host of the Fox Business network’s "The Independents". Among others.

Matthew Schutter
A panel of four diverse and distinguished elected Libertarians will talk about their experience serving in office at the National Libertarian Party Convention in Columbus, Ohio which runs June 26–29: Todd Grayson, city councilman of Perrysburg, Ohio; W. Brooke Harris, member of the Alfred-Almond Central School Board in New York; Brian Holtz, director on the Purissima Hills Water District Board in California; and Matt Schutter, auditor for Penn Forest Township in Pennsylvania.
The panelists will discuss their goals for shrinking government as Libertarians in office and the victories and obstacles they have experienced. They will touch on how activists can support their elected Libertarians and recommend ways that Libertarians running for office can best prepare themselves to advance liberty if elected.

Libertarian Florida U.S. House candidate polling over 30%
Lucas Overby for Congress in Florida
Lucas Overby
Lucas Overby, the Libertarian candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives 13th District seat in Florida, is polling at 31 percent in a two-way race according to a poll commissioned by the St.PetersBlog. The Republican incumbent, David Jolly, is polling at 47 percent.
"We are excited about these poll numbers. We are two months ahead of where we expected to be," Overby said.
Libertarian candidates, especially federal candidates, rarely poll this high — particularly not five months prior to an election.

Record-breaking 17 Libertarians on the ballot in Hawaii
Tracey Ryan
Tracey Ryan
The Hawaii LP has placed 17 candidates on the Aug. 9 primary election ballot.
This is the highest number of candidates that the state party has ever run.
The LPHI has candidates for governor, lieutenant governor, U.S. senator, 1 of the 2 U.S. House races, 5 of the state Senate seats, and 8 of the races for state representative.
If the 13 candidates for the state legislature can total 2 percent of the vote for all 64 legislative races, the party will retain ballot access for 2016. 5 of these 13 candidates will have one-on-one races, so reaching the 2 percent threshold is a possibility, and if that threshold is reached the party would not have to petition to be on the ballot in 2016.

From the Daily Beast article dated June 5, 2014, about Libertarian candidates in the southern United States:
Drawing surprisingly high support, a trio of Libertarian candidates has the potential to disrupt already tight races in the Deep South, where Democrats and Republicans are waging epic battles for Florida governor, Georgia governor, and one of North Carolina's seats in the U.S. Senate ...

Edward Snowden, Internet's largest websites join Reset the Net

Companies, trade groups, consumer organizations and Internet users form growing backlash against government spying programs and move to directly block it on the Internet

Reset the Net - June 5, 2014Fight for the Future and its partners launched Reset the Net today, a national backlash campaign comprised of internet users and tech companies who commit taking back their right to privacy and protecting the Internet by using NSA-resistant privacy tools on their devices, and to take their privacy back — one user, one cat video, one device at a time. Reset the Net demands that web services take concrete steps to protect their users from government snooping, while encouraging the spread of free and open source privacy tools.
"It's been one year since Edward Snowden blew the whistle on the U.S. government's abusive spying programs. In that time Congress and the Obama Administration have failed to protect our rights," said Tiffiniy Cheng, spokesperson for Fight for the Future. "Now, they've got a rebellion on their hands as tech companies and internet users work together to directly intervene in mass surveillance and block the NSA and its kind from the web."

The National Convention is only four weeks away!
Kmele Foster, Co-Host, 'The Independents' on FOX Business Network
Kmele Foster
Terrific News: We have secured our headline speaker for the Grand Banquet! It's Kmele Foster, one of the co-hosts on the new hit (libertarian) show on FBN, "The Independents." He's young and intelligent and has a knack for expressing libertarian positions in an eloquent manner. I first caught him on FOX's "Red Eye" and have been "eyeing" him for a few years. Don't miss this opportunity to see and hear this important figure in the libertarian movement.

The dynamic Ben Swann will be the emcee of the Banquet program, which will also feature "Ben Franklin" himself, plus arias by "the Red Diva" Elizabeth Gentner; and we will also honor our 2012 presidential ticket of Gov. Gary Johnson and Judge Jim Gray. You will not want to miss this highlight of the convention!
Joe DeVito, Comedian
Joe DeVito
Tatiana Moroz, Liberty Singer/Songwriter
Tatiana Moroz
The Thursday night "Welcome" Reception will be a lot more than just mingling. We have booked two professional entertainers: comedian Joe DeVito and singer/songwriter Tatiana Moroz (both libertarians). It promises to be a wonderful evening to jump-start the weekend.
It's been a challenge (for me and for our hardworking webmaster) to keep the convention website updated with new information. [This is particularly difficult right now: because of the purchase of a new office property, LPHQ is moving and must be out of the Watergate on the 31st — just two days from now.]
Besides the speakers and entertainers currently on the website, we will also give face-time (as part of the Breakfast and Lunch programs and some on the convention "floor") to a number of high-profile LP candidates from around the country. And there will be at least one panel of elected Libertarians to share the challenges and successes of their experiences in office.
Don't forget: You do not have to be a credentialed delegate to attend! Buy a Gold package to see and hear every one of the guest speakers and entertainers.
The cutoff date to reserve rooms at the Hyatt Regency Columbus is June 5. (After that, rooms will still be at our discounted rate, but "based on availability.") A discount has also been negotiated with a local taxi company just for our attendees for airport transportation. (The specifics will be added ASAP to the convention website.)
Don't miss this chance to be with hundreds of other Libertarians; it will be a memorable weekend that you don't want to miss! I hope to see many new faces.
