Libertarian Party response to 2014 State of the Union address

Libertarian Party response to 2014 State of the Union addressWASHINGTON — Libertarian Party Executive Director Wes Benedict issued the following statement today in response to President Barack Obama's State of the Union address:
Thanks to unprecedented levels of government interference and government coercion, Americans' rights are violated like never before. We are harmed by taxes, regulations, prohibitions, and shocking privacy intrusions.
Unfortunately, most of the harm and injustice of government occurs because too many Americans support existing government policies. We're suffering under a tyranny of the majority. Our Libertarian hope is that we can convince enough Americans to change their minds. We hope voters will come to understand that government is force, and force is unjust.
Here are some of the problems we see.
The government debt situation is atrocious. Government debt is a terrible thing, because it forces future generations to pay off debts they never agreed to incur. From 2001 to 2008, George W. Bush doubled the debt, mostly with the support of a Republican Congress. Since 2009, Barack Obama and the Democrats (and Republicans) have nearly doubled it again. It doesn't matter whether Republicans or Democrats control the government. Libertarians would quickly balance the budget by cutting spending on everything, including entitlements and the military.
Thanks to the work of Republicans and Democrats, America has declined in the Economic Freedom Index. We've been sliding for years, and now we're down to #12. We're below Australia, Canada, and Denmark. Libertarian policies would get us back to #1.
Government should stop creating programs to fight economic inequality. Some economic inequality is natural and healthy in a free society. Actually, government often creates artificial inequality by granting special privileges to certain businesses or classes of people. Republicans and Democrats do that all the time. Libertarians prefer a level playing field.
The employment situation is still pretty bad. Why? Because government gets in between employers and employees, and tries to dictate everything. Minimum wage laws, hiring laws, firing laws, subsidies, and business taxes all make it harder to create jobs and find jobs. These laws are supported by both Republicans and Democrats. Libertarians would eliminate the minimum wage, employment red tape, and business subsidies and taxes.
Since 2001, the federal budget has exploded. Whenever the government spends money, it displaces it out of the private sector. That means the government is making more choices about how we use our resources, and free people are making fewer choices. That inevitably harms our economy. Libertarians would eliminate most programs, and cut spending on the rest.
If there's one thing we have learned since 2001, it's that we can't trust what government officials say. They lie. Bush and Cheney said there were weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. James Clapper (Director of National Intelligence) said under oath that the NSA does not collect data on Americans. Those are a couple of the most outrageous lies, but there have been many others. The more power government has, the more government officials will have the opportunity and incentive to lie. Libertarians would greatly reduce government power.
Government should not be trusted to tell the truth about global warming, or to create restrictions in the name of fighting it. Look at the waste and environmental damage caused by government ethanol subsidies!
It used to be that if you said the government was watching you, people thought you were paranoid. Now, partly thanks to the efforts of Edward Snowden, everyone knows it's true. Between the Patriot Act, the IRS, the FBI, and the NSA (and probably other agencies as well), Americans have no idea whether ANYTHING they do is private anymore. Government should respect people's privacy, not violate it. Libertarians would end foreign wars, and end the War on Drugs, which would take away most of the government's excuse for spying. Libertarians would also repeal the Patriot Act and other invasions of privacy.
What about Obamacare? The problems with American health care go far beyond Obamacare. The problem is the whole huge mess that government interference has created. For decades, the government has done nothing but undermine health care by interfering in the health care market, and creating mandates and prohibitions that override our choices. Obamacare took a bad situation and made it worse — but let's not forget that it was already very bad. And that's thanks to the efforts of both Democrats and Republicans. As stated in our platform, Libertarians would "recognize the freedom of individuals to determine the level of health insurance they want (if any), the level of health care they want, the care providers they want, the medicines and treatments they will use and all other aspects of their medical care, including end-of-life decisions."
Libertarians believe that government should have no involvement in education whatsoever. That goes double for the federal government. Unfortunately, the federal government massively interferes with education today: subsidies for preschool, subsidies for K–12 education, subsidies for higher education, and lots of mandates and regulations thanks to efforts like the Republicans' No Child Left Behind law. Our children would be much happier and better educated if government would get out of the way. Libertarians would eliminate the Department of Education and repeal No Child Left Behind.
Republicans and Democrats have also created a mess with immigration. The immigration debate has nothing to do with border security; it's all about employment. Currently, millions of foreigners work here illegally, because Republicans and Democrats have made it almost impossible to do legally. Libertarians would make it very easy for foreigners to come here, live here, and work here.
How about the military? The Libertarian attitude is pretty simple: the U.S. military should leave other countries alone, even if their governments are unstable, and even if there are people living there who hate Americans. We need to cut military spending a whole lot. Try getting Republicans or Democrats to support ANY cuts to military spending.
Amid all this gloom, we do see a bright spot: the War on Drugs. In 2012, voters in Colorado and Washington passed initiatives to end prohibition of marijuana. Recently the New Hampshire House of Representatives did so too. A majority of Americans now believe that marijuana should not be prohibited. As time goes on, we believe that more and more Americans will join us in opposing the War on Drugs. We're pleased President Obama is moving in our direction on this issue.
All in all, the state of our union is a big mess created by Republicans and Democrats. Libertarians offer a path forward to peace and prosperity. Our 149 elected Libertarians nationwide work to implement libertarian policies directly. Hundreds of other Libertarians run for office each election cycle.

  4. LPKS Annual Meeting/Nominating Convention in Wichita April 26th

1.   From The Editor

What an exciting year for Kansas Libertarians! This year we expect to achieve major party status by getting 5% (and more) of the vote in the Governor’s race.

We feel this is our time due to the fact that the LPKS has gotten a lot of attention in the press the past few years for our efforts on many issues, such as supporting second amendment rights, encouraging the growth of private schools, abolishing the death penalty in Kansas, and protecting citizens from eminent domain abuses.

Our officers and members have gone to legislative committee hearings to give testimony on these and many other issues. They have gotten to know their Senators and Representatives and reached out and found support for our positions in the legislature, gaining respect for themselves and the LPKS in the process.

It is also due to having two announced candidates for Governor, Tresa McAlheney and Keen Umbehr, early in the election cycle. The Kansas City Star had a great article about these candidates and the LPKS recently that was reprinted in the Wichita Eagle and many other newspapers around the state.

Other reasons for our expectations are that Governor Sam Brownback’s tactics and policies have alienated a large number of Kansans who object to his hardball management style. Also, the LPKS is now the only third party on the ballot in Kansas, and the fact that in Kansas, as well as nationally, the two major parties are showing themselves incapable of governing.

Recent events such as IRS abuses, NSA spying on Americans, the health care debacle, never ending war, debt limit increases to pay for deficit spending, government shutdowns, etc., are leading the voters of this state and nation to more seriously consider the LP, our philosophy and policies and our candidates as a viable alternative to the status quo.

This will be our year if we rise to the challenge. We need donors, activists, candidates and campaign workers now more than ever as we head into the November elections.

I ask you for your support. Make a contribution to the party or a candidate. Attend your local LP activist group meetings. Talk up our party and candidates to your friends and family.

Go to LPKS.org to find out more about the party and make a contribution soon. Plan to attend the State Convention in April and help in our effort to become a major political party in Kansas this year!

Dear Friend of Liberty,
Tomorrow night, the Libertarian Party will issue a response to President Obama's annual State of the Union speech. Watch for this response shortly after the president concludes his remarks. We'll send it by email, and post it on LP.org and our Facebook page.
If you want an interesting take on SOTU speeches, have a look at this 2010 article by Gene Healy of the Cato Institute.
Convention date mistake in LP News: The December 2013 issue of LP News printed the wrong dates for the 2014 national convention on page 5, in paragraph 2. The correct dates for the convention are June 26–29. The error was introduced by staff, and was not the fault of the author of the article. We apologize for the error. The convention ad on the back page of LP News does have the correct dates. Separately, we expect a convention website to be published in the next couple of weeks.

New Gallup Poll: 46 percent of Americans don't identify as either Democrat or Republican
Gallup Poll shows rise in independent voters
More good news for Libertarian Party prospects.
Americans who self-identify as politically independent hit a 25-year high of 46 percent in the fourth quarter of 2013, according to a new Gallup poll. The poll did not ask participants if they identified specifically as Libertarian.
For all polls conducted during 2013, the average percentage of respondents who identified as independent was 42 percent, another high mark since Gallup started conducting the poll 25 years ago.

North Carolina Libertarians see opportunity in rising discontent of voters

Brad Hessel,
LP North Carolina
Executive Director
The Republican and Democratic establishment is devoted to a government that constantly expands in size and power, bringing Americans reckless spending, punitive taxation, burdensome regulation, pervasive surveillance, outrageous prohibitions, destructive foreign policy, and militarized law enforcement. As voter dissatisfaction continues to rise, the Libertarian Party of North Carolina's recently appointed executive director, Brad Hessel, argues in a recent press release that Libertarians are in an ideal position to help direct the public's anger toward increasing liberty:
The Libertarian Party of North Carolina's new executive director believes the growing public dissatisfaction with the government in general and the "two-party" system in particular offers a new opportunity to move public policy in a more libertarian direction.
"As the Democrats and Republicans move us relentlessly down the road to hell, kicking the can as we go, more and more Americans can feel the heat rising," said Brad Hessel, who was appointed last month.

Ohio LP court victory cuts back GOP attempt to block ballot access
A U.S. district court ruling on Jan. 7 substantially reduced the onerous ballot access rules that Ohio Republicans attempted to impose on Libertarians running for office, leaving the Ohio LP in good shape for retaining ballot access through 2018.
State LP Chair Kevin Knedler reports that:
  • Libertarians will be included in the primary election and on the November ballot in 2014, labeled as Libertarian.
  • He expects the Libertarian governor candidate Charles Earl to win more than 2 percent of the vote in November. He is currently polling at 6 percent. This will keep the LP on the ballot for four years instead of two years.
  • The LP's 2016 presidential candidate will likely make the ballot.

New Hampshire legislature first to vote in favor of marijuana legalization
Defeat of the failed war on marijuana — long opposed by the Libertarian Party — took another giant step forward on Jan. 15 when the New Hampshire House became the first legislative body in the United States to vote in favor of legalization of cannabis.
The bill, H.B. 492, would decriminalize possession of one ounce of marijuana by adults and would allow residents to grow up to six plants. It passed in the House by a vote of 170-162 after heated debate.

US government 'manipulating' unemployment rate
US government 'manipulating' unemployment rateThe US government is "manipulating" the country's "dangerously high" unemployment rate, one of the many ways that it "deceives American voters," a political analyst tells Press TV.
"Manipulating the unemployment rate is one of many ways that the federal government deceives American voters," said Carla Howell, the political director for the Libertarian National Committee in Washington.
"The unemployment rate is dangerously high for young workers. They're trapped between a rock and a hard place," she said on Monday.
"But young workers aren't the only ones affected. Workers of all ages are struggling to find well-paying jobs," she added.
"No matter what politicians claim the unemployment rate is, workers searching for jobs know better. They see that Democratic and Republican promises to ‘stimulate the economy' have utterly failed."

LP response to President Barack Obama's announced plan for minor reforms of NSA mass surveillance

Government phone snooping demands immediate repeal of Patriot Act, FISA, NDAAStatement from Geoffrey J. Neale, chair, Libertarian National Committee, in response to President Barack Obama's announced plan for minor reforms of NSA mass surveillance:
"Whenever any form of government becomes destructive of the rights of its citizens, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it. And, make no mistake, our governments — federal, state, and local — have all become injurious to the rights of citizens.
"Barack Obama today delivered a speech that promised next to nothing. He promised that 'greater safeguards for civil liberties' will be enacted, and that steps will be taken to rein in the worst of the NSA surveillance abuses.
"But government cannot be reined in. Once it has power, it seeks more. Once it has information, it keeps it — and often tells us that it didn't keep it (such as the records of gun purchases run through the NICS system) even though it really did — and then it wants more. It is the nature of the beast; everything it thinks it can use, it stuffs into its gaping, insatiable maw.
"There is already a list of 'safeguards,' and they are mentioned specifically in the Constitution. If the supreme law of the land is 'just a piece of paper,' what other 'safeguards' will keep millions of bureaucrats from breaking the law further?
"The only way to limit government intrusion into our lives is to eliminate the functions that have little to do with defending individual rights within our borders. If government were restricted only to acting on its one legitimate function — protecting individual rights — 95 percent of government operations would cease to exist. And Edward Snowden would have had little incentive to break the news on the government's rampant criminality.
"Edward Snowden should be granted a full pardon and complete immunity from prosecution. The government's ire should instead be turned toward prosecuting the millions of bureaucrats who have violated both their oaths of office, statute law, and even the Constitution itself.
"A non-interventionist nation at peace with the world doesn't need a worldwide security apparatus. A nation that doesn't meddle in conflicts around the world doesn't need a two-ocean Navy, or thousands of nuclear weapons, or gargantuan stockpiles of chemical and biological agents. A nation that stays out of foreign conflicts is less likely to be a target of terrorists. And a nation like that doesn't need to spy constantly on its own citizens."

Dear Friend of Liberty,
Introduction to the Libertarian Party, by Wes BenedictWhy Government Doesn't Work, by Harry Browne
Libertarianism in One Lesson, by David BerglandSecrets of Libertarian Persuasion, by Michael Cloud
I'm offering you four important books for 30 bucks. Or you can pick just one for as low as $11.97. Free shipping.
I selected these four books for a reason.
These aren't just any old books about liberty. They are books about the Libertarian Party, about libertarianism applied to many issues, and about how to communicate Libertarian Party principles and solutions.
I want you to read these books this winter because I want to help you be a better Libertarian Party activist later this year.
One of them I wrote myself last year. I couldn't find a book that introduced the libertarian philosophy and also gave lots of information about the Libertarian Party for volunteers and candidates. So, I wrote that book myself!
It's called Introduction to the Libertarian Party.
Brian Holtz, of California, a multi-term member of the Libertarian Party's Platform Committee, writes:
I'm jealous at how good this book is! ... Most of the chapters would be great as standalone readings for those particular topics, and I hope the author releases them for redistribution, so they will be read more widely than even this instant classic will be.
You can find a list of the chapters on the order page.
I'm donating as many copies of my book as you order from this appeal, which ends on Jan. 31. So, 100 percent of your donation for this book will help fund other efforts after shipping costs are covered.
The book Why Government Doesn't Work was written by Harry Browne, the Libertarian Party's 1996 and 2000 nominee for president. Harry Browne was famous for his bold libertarian solutions and was considered a master communicator by many. These books from 1995 are not in new condition — they've been in our basement storage for more than a decade, but are still great for reading, especially if you are new to the party and aren't familiar with Browne's fantastic work.
The following two books, we're getting in bulk, at cost, and the profits help fund other LP projects.
Libertarianism in One Lesson, by David Bergland (Ninth Edition, 2005), answers the most common questions about libertarianism. What is libertarianism? Does libertarianism work in the "real world"? The book lays out the central premise of libertarianism — "you own yourself" — and reveals how that deceptively simple statement has an enormous impact on the relationship between government and individuals.
Finally, Secrets of Libertarian Persuasion, by Michael Cloud (2004), will help you "open hearts and minds to the ideas of liberty." From the book's cover: "Want to open closed minds? Want to make people really listen? Want to make people hungry to hear about liberty? Want to learn more powerful and effective ways to communicate libertarian ideas? Secrets of Libertarian Persuasion makes this possible." For disclosure purposes, Michael Cloud is a current board member on the LNC.
Again, these aren't just general books about liberty, politics or economics. These were selected to help you be a better Libertarian Party activist.
Please order them all today for 30 bucks, or just pick one.
Yours in liberty,
Wes Benedict

Dear Friend of Liberty,
LP News, Dec. 2013I'd like some feedback from you regarding LP News for our editor, Eric Dixon.
First a little background. As you may know, LP News is the primary print newsletter for the national Libertarian Party. In recent years, we've published four issues per year. We plan to publish six issues in 2014.
We mail the print version of LP News to dues-paying members of the LP. Several weeks after a printed issue ships, we post an electronic copy of LP News online.
Some people have asked us to post LP News online as soon as the print version is available. Common reasons given are so that readers can more easily email articles to others, and to make it available to prospective Libertarians while the news is freshest.
You can find issues of LP News online here.
One drawback to publishing LP New online as soon as the print version is available is that dues-paying members will no longer get the benefit of seeing LP News before others.
I'm fine going with whatever a clear majority of our members prefer. That's why I'm asking you to complete this poll.
Also, feel free to reply to this note with any suggestions about LP News. While we do read most of your responses to emails like this, we don't always have the resources to follow up. Nevertheless, we appreciate your feedback and often are able to improve as a result. By the way, we are considering publishing a Kindle version of LP News, as well.
Click here to take the poll.

LSOCK NEWS Alert!

Hello everyone,

I hope you all had a great holiday season and are surviving the recent cold spell.

The LSOCK Supper Meetings are resuming after two weeks off due to Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve falling on Tuesdays in 2013.

Please join us for supper and conversation at Cathy’s Westway CafĂ© every Tuesday evening. We are planning to have several guest speakers and other activities at some of the supper meeting in the next few months and through this year.

There is a lot in store this year for the Libertarian Party of Kansas and LSOCK.

The LPKS Nominating Convention will be held in Wichita on Saturday, April 26 at the East I-35 Holiday Inn, Rock Road and Kellogg. Governor Gary Johnson will be our featured Speaker at the Banquet Saturday evening and will appear at a meet and greet mixer the Friday evening before the Saturday Convention Banquet.

More details will be in a full LSOCK News soon.

For Liberty,

Steven A. Rosile
