Poll says majority of Americans aligned with Libertarian Party on foreign policy
Majority Says U.S. Should 'Mind Its Own Business Internationally'
A poll released by the Pew Research Center indicates that a majority of Americans are aligned with the Libertarian Party's goals of less U.S. military intervention and more free trade.
The poll concludes that Americans' support for U.S. global engagement has fallen to a historic low while "support for closer trade and business ties with other nations stands at its highest point in more than a decade."
For the first time in nearly 40 years since the survey was first conducted, a majority (52 percent) say that the United States should "mind its own business internationally and let other countries get along the best they can on their own."
Add foreign policy to the growing list of broad issues with which the American public is aligned with the Libertarian Party.

LP statement on rock-bottom approval ratings for lobbyists, Congress

LP Political Director Carla Howell was quoted by Press TV
on Dec. 16, 2013
A Gallup Poll released on Dec. 16 that was conducted a week earlier shows that Americans disapprove of lobbyists and members of Congress the most out of 22 categories of professionals.
In response, LP Political Director Carla Howell made this statement on Press TV:
It is no wonder that Democrats and Republicans in Congress, along with their lobbyists, are viewed so poorly by the American people.
Democrats and Republicans are supposed to represent the people, but they don't.
They cater to lobbyists who work for powerful special interests which profit from Big Government — on the backs of the American worker: Corporations, government contractors, government unions, lawyers and other cartels, and government bureaucracies.
Democrats and Republicans don't even seem to care that their approval ratings are in the gutter. So long as they can pass laws to marginalize other political parties and get themselves re-elected, they're satisfied.

Libertarian and former lawmaker Charles Earl running for Ohio governor aims to reduce personal, business taxes to 'zero'
Charles Earl
Charles Earl,
LP Ohio
Candidate for Governor
Charles Earl, a former Republican representative in the Ohio General Assembly who switched his party affiliation to Libertarian in 2010, is running for governor in Ohio in 2014 to advance personal freedom and constitutional government.
Earl told the Sandusky Register, "We aim to reduce business and corporate taxes to 'zero.' Therefore, no large corporate entity will receive favored treatment via the tax code. All businesses of all sizes will have equal competitive statures under our plan."
He continued, "With the anticipated increase in economic activity, we plan to reduce the personal income to 'zero' as well. It is immoral and unconscionable for government to benefit from a person's labor."

Elected Libertarian councilman campaigned on high city debt
Libertarian Councilman Erwin Haas
Erwin Haas,
Kentwood, Mich., City Commissioner
Thanks to newly-elected Libertarian Erwin Haas, the people in Kentwood, Mich., a suburb of Grand Rapids, now know there's a huge public debt problem.
Haas won a tightly contested race to unseat incumbent Maurice Groce by 68 votes, for the second ward seat of the city commission. The vote was 1,105 to 1,037.
Haas may have won his race because he disagreed with his opponent on the size of the city's debt.
"My campaign pointed out that we had $30 million in debt, which surprised and shook up a lot of voters," said Haas.
He notes that this debt was incurred by unnecessary expenditures for a new city hall, a hall of justice, and a library.
"As a result, taxes have had to be increased, pinching many a resident who would like to spend that money to pay for medications or for paint for their houses," he said.

Three D.C. Libertarians heading for ballot
Bruce Majors
Bruce Majors,
D.C. Libertarian Party
Candidate for Mayor
Three Libertarians today filed petitions with the D.C. Board of Elections with enough signatures to assure them places on the April 2014 primary ballot. Winners in the primary are automatically assured placement on the November 2014 general election ballot.
The three candidates who filed signatures today are:
  1. Bruce Majors for mayor. Majors, a resident of Ward 2, has lived in Washington, D.C., since 1980. A Realtor and graduate student in economics at George Mason University, Majors's 2012 campaign for Congress earned 16,500 votes and permanent ballot status for the Libertarian Party in D.C., making ballot access dramatically easier than in the past.
  2. Frederick Steiner for city council at large. Steiner is a resident of Ward 4. An IT professional, he is married and the father of a one-year-old. He earned an MBA from George Mason University in 2011.
  3. Sara Jane Panfil for delegate to Congress. Panfil is a Ward 3 resident and paralegal. She is a 2010 graduate of Columbia University.

Latest federal budget deal screams, 'Vote Libertarian'

Lucas Overby
Photo by Gage Skidmore (CC BY-SA 2.0)
President Barack Obama and the Democrats and Republicans in Congress, reeling from low voter-approval ratings, are anxious to cut a budget deal that takes the heat off of both parties yet keeps their special interest masters content.
"While people are busy preparing for the holidays, now's a great time, they figure, to jam more government overspending and tax increases on the American people, just as they did earlier this year," said Geoffrey J. Neale, chair of the Libertarian Party.
Last January — while Americans were watching New Year's Day parades, cheering for football teams, and recovering from hangovers — Congress passed a bill to hike the Social Security payroll tax, costing the average American taxpayer $800 every year. In addition, they hiked taxes on estates, incomes, health care, and businesses.
Now leading Democrats and Republicans in the U.S. House, with nods from Senate leaders and the president, have cut a tentative deal to:
  • continue to add nearly $1 trillion yearly to the $17.2 trillion national debt;
  • lock in funding for job-killing, life-threatening Obamacare;
  • add another $60 billion in new federal spending for special interests, including defense contractors and federal government retirees;
  • eliminate much of their celebrated "sequester," a pathetically small reduction in future government overspending;
  • and raise taxes, including an increase in TSA fees that they will tack onto the cost of airline tickets.
"Why not grab every tax dollar they can, they figure, and nail down a budget during the holidays that will avoid the backlash of a possible government ‘shutdown' in January?" Neale asked.
"Why not pass a two-year — rather than a one-year — budget deal, Democrats and Republicans figure, so they don't have to deal with prickly budget negotiations next fall, right before many of them are up for reelection?" he continued.
High government overspending is killing the economy, killing jobs, and devaluing the dollar — along with the savings and earnings of every American.
High taxes, including the hidden tax of inflation that results from Democrats' and Republicans' deficit spending, is depleting Americans' wealth and is sending more American jobs overseas.
Republicans who pretend to oppose Obamacare are letting it fly, refusing to defund it. If left unchecked, Obamacare will force more small businesses to close; bar Americans from needed health care, leaving diseases untreated; raise health insurance premiums; and raise out-of-pocket costs. The unaffordable burdens of Obamacare may well deal the final, fatal blow to America's status as the world's leading economy.
"An outrage" does not begin to describe the level of wanton, self-serving, fiscally irresponsible, and heartless behavior of today's Democratic and Republican politicians in Congress," Neale said. "There is only one way to stop them from destroying the economy: Vote Libertarian."

Dear Friend of Liberty,
I am contributing $250 to help defray the cost of rescheduling a Libertarian National Committee (LNC) meeting and I'd like to ask for your help as well.
Allow me to explain.
Twenty-six people from around the country serve as LNC members or alternates. The LNC is the board of directors of the national Libertarian Party and I'm the Chairman.
LNC members and officers like me are not paid. We are volunteers. We pay for our own flights and hotel rooms out of pocket to attend three to four meetings per year. Serving on the LNC for a two-year term costs each LNC member like me at least three thousand dollars out of pocket.
This past weekend the LNC was supposed to meet in Dallas, but Dallas, like much of the nation, was hit by a winter storm.
Too many people's flights were cancelled which would have prevented us from being able to reach a quorum, so we had to cancel the meeting at the last minute.
Unfortunately, we did not know in advance we were going to have to cancel the meeting. In fact, nine people had already boarded flights bound for Dallas and a some made it all the way.
People who made it part of the way or even all the way to Dallas include: Dianna Visek of Illinois, Rich Tomasso of New Hampshire, Tim Hagan and Brett Pojunis of Nevada, Starchild and Scott Lieberman of California, Michael Cloud from Arizona, Vicki Kirkland of Florida, Sam Goldstein of Indiana. (Sorry if I missed someone.)
So far, American Airlines and the Hyatt where we were scheduled to meet have been very good about re-booking our flights with minimal extra expense. Unfortunately, the people who actually made it to Dallas instead of getting their flights cancelled have to buy new tickets for our meeting which is rescheduled for next weekend at the Hyatt Regency DFW Airport. Our meetings are open to members, and the meeting details are here.
This meeting is important, and it's where we will set our 2014 budget.
Altogether our board members will probably incur an extra $4,000 total in expenses for having to reschedule this meeting.
I was lucky and was able to reschedule my travel without incurring any extra charges. But I am contributing $250 to help defray the cost to other members who were not so lucky.
I hope you'll consider pitching in to help defray their costs as well. We set up a fund for this specific purpose.
If we raise more than needed, the excess will go into our general fund.
With warmest regards,
LNC Chair Geoffrey Neale

Libertarian Party Chair Neale forges ties with European counterparts

Libertarian Party Chair Geoffrey Neale speaks to Spain's Individual Freedom Party (P-LIB)
Libertarian Party Chair Geoffrey Neale speaks to
Spain's Individual Freedom Party (P-LIB).
Libertarian Party Chair Geoffrey Neale made an historic trip in November to forge ties with emerging Libertarian Parties in Europe and Russia.
Neale addressed audiences in Madrid and Moscow, well-attended by Libertarian leaders within each country as well as by representatives from the U.K., Italy, Germany, and the Netherlands.
Neale's trip coincided with the recent formation of a new pan-European party — the European Party for International Liberty (EPIL) — which aims to advance libertarian policy in the European Union.
EPIL's second official meeting took place at a conference where Neale was the featured speaker, hosted by the Individual Freedom Party (P-LIB), the Spanish equivalent of the U.S. Libertarian Party.
"[Neale's] presentation was highly informative, educational, and inspirational," said Guy Montrose, Chairman of the U.K. Libertarian Party (LPUK).
Juan Pina, president of P-LIB, said Neale's presentation affirmed his members' view that forming a new party is more effective than trying to effect change from within an established party.
"It is important to hear that from the original Libertarian Party, the oldest one in the world, and the one that inspired our foundation in 2009," he said.
Neale also addressed attendees of the Fifth Adam Smith Forum in Moscow, which hosted libertarians from more than 20 regions of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), including Russia, Belarus, Tajikistan, and the Ukraine.
"It was definitely the [best attended] libertarian get-together in the CIS ever," said Andrey Shalnev, chair of the Libertarian Party of Russia (LPR).
The LPR plans to run candidates for the Moscow City Duma (parliament) in 2014 while the UKLP plans to run candidates in the next local elections. P-LIB is gearing up to run candidates for the European Parliament in May.
Leaders who attended both gatherings expressed a strong desire to expand international alliances among the world's Libertarian Parties.
"We'd gladly contribute to an international libertarian association, bringing together Libertarian parties," Shalnev said. "Libertarians from all over the world should be constantly sharing their experience of promoting liberty."
