Calling Out Marco Rubio!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

March 30th, 2012

"Marco Rubio, Withdraw Your Endorsement of Mitt Romney. He's a Big Government Politician."

Mark Hinkle Libertarian Party Chair urges Congressman Marco Rubio

"With all due respect, Congressman Rubio, you failed to do your homework. As an alleged 'Tea Party Republican,' your endorsement of Mitt Romney misleads the true Tea Partiers from coast to coast," said Mark Hinkle, Libertarian Party Chair.
"Congressman Rubio, you assert that Mitt Romney was a 'successful' governor in Massachusetts. Which part of Mitt Romney's record as Governor do you consider a success?
  • Mitt Romney raised scores of taxes - every year, all 4 years as Governor.
  • Romney proposed and signed into law Massachusetts government spending hikes every single year he was Governor.
  • Mitt Romney boosted his state government spending by $5 billion.
  • Governor Romney initiated, lobbied for and signed into law RomneyCare - the father of ObamaCare - and railroaded Republicans in the legislature to vote for it
  • Governor Romney ushered in ObamaCare. If he's the Republican Presidential Nominee, he leaves Republicans no ground to oppose ObamaCare - and is seen as a hypocrite when he pretends to oppose it
  • Governor Mitt Romney endorsed and voted for New England's version of Cap and Trade.
  • Romney passed enabling legislation that raised business property taxes.
  • Governor Romney "Closed loopholes" to enforce sales tax collection on Internet purchases.
"Congressman Rubio, please explain: If these Big Government Mitt Romney measures were a 'success' - what would failure look like?"

###
P.S. If you have not already done so, please join the Libertarian Party. We are the only political party with a mission to give voters a choice to downsize Big Government, to do so in the most humane way possible, to greatly reduce taxes, and to slash high government spending. You can also renew your membership. Or, you can simply make a contribution .

Wichita Eagle: Letters To The Editor

Over the last couple of years, at least one opinion line contributor continually references "superrich libertarians" as the cause for all of society's ills.  The latest installment contends that the talk show hosts on Wichita radio are spouting the talking points of these "superrich libertarians" and that "we will not get to hear the other side until the Fairness Doctrine is brought back."

First, the Fairness Doctrine gave power to government agencies to regulate the ideological content of radio programming.  It was defeated by free speech advocates and is not something I'd like to see revisited.  For whatever reason, liberal viewpoints have not historically done well on radio (as evidenced by the failure of Air America).  However, "the other side" is readily available in many different media outlets without the aid of new laws.

Second, most talk show hosts on local radio are conservative, not libertarian.  The difference is not trivial.

Third, the idea that libertarians are "superrich" is news to me.  The libertarians that I know are average, hard-working Kansans who are tired of overreaching government.  I suspect that if libertarians were really "superrich," my party's fundraising efforts would be substantially easier and our elected officials more numerous.

Roger Stone, former Nixon Hit Man Is Now A Libertarian
Written by Bob Adelmann from New American Magazine
Wednesday, 14 March 2012 15:18
In a note to his readers on February 15th Roger Stone (left) announced his resignation from the Republican Party, changing his voter registration to the Libertarian Party. A self-proclaimed “GOP hit-man,” Stone became involved in politics in his teens, working for President Nixon’s reelection campaign in 1972 (known as the Committee to Re-elect the President, or CREEP), serving as the National Director of Youth for Reagan in 1976 and then as the Young Republican National Chairman from 1977 to 1979. He worked for the Reagan presidential campaign in 1980 and in 1984 and then for Jack Kemp’s campaign for president in 1988.
In so doing Stone left behind a legacy of political dirty tricks and outrageous shenanigans that in some cases altered American political history. He was born with the ability to observe a situation and then see how to take advantage of it. In the first grade his first political trick was to support John F. Kennedy in his campaign against Nixon in 1960. He brags: “I remember going through the cafeteria line and telling every kid that Nixon was in favor of school on Saturdays. It was my first political trick.” When he ran for election as president of his high school senior class he said he “built alliances and put all my serious challengers on my ticket. Then I recruited the most unpopular guy in the school to run against me. You think that’s mean? No, it’s smart!”
He saw an opportunity for another trick during Nixon’s campaign in 1972. He adopted the name Jason Rainer and made contributions in the name of the Young Socialist Alliance to Pete McCloskey’s campaign (McCloskey was Nixon’s challenger in the primary). He then sent the receipt to the Manchester Union Leader to “prove” that McCloskey was in fact a left-wing stooge.
Later on Stone hired a GOP staffer, gave him the pseudonym Sedan Chair II, who wound up serving as George McGovern’s chauffeur creating in information pipeline directly to the Nixon campaign.
Perhaps the most outrageous, and historically important, of Stone’s tricks, known as the “Brooks Brothers riot,” took place in Miami-Dade County, Florida on November 21st, 2000, during the recount of ballots in the Presidential election. The Florida Supreme Court had just ruled in favor of Al Gore to allow a recount but it had to be completed by November 26th. Stone saw his opportunity to delay the recount until after the 26th by bringing in GOP staffers to protest the recount. In an interview with The New Yorker magazine, Stone told what happened:
The whole idea behind what [we] were doing was that there had already been one recount of the votes so we [the Bush campaign] didn’t want another. The idea was to shut it down, stop the recount here in Miami…
We set up a Winnebago trailer. I set up my command center. I had walkie-talkies and cell phones and I was in touch with our people in the building. Our whole idea was to shut the recount down. That was why we were there…
There was a Brooks Brothers contingent [people dressed to look like business executives in Brooks Brothers clothing] but the crowd in front of the courthouse was largely Spanish…
The resulting confrontation led to riots which prompted the recount officials to stop the recount, depriving Gore of his best opportunity to overtake Bush in the narrow Florida, and national, vote.
Stone’s initial support of George W. Bush began to fade, expressing his dissatisfaction to Benjamin Sarlin after the elections in November, 2008:
I think across the board he’s led the party to its current position, which means losing both houses of congress and now the White House. How can you be conservative and justify wiretapping people without a warrant? We’re supposed to be the party of personal freedom and civil liberties. Big brother listening in on your phone calls – I got a problem with that.
In his letter outlining his reasons for leaving the Republican Party, Stone noted: “Sadly the difference between the two major parties has become rhetorical. Under the Democrats you’re going to hell. Under the Republicans you are still going to hell but you are going more slowly.”  He added:
To real conservatives the freedom of the individual is paramount. No one should be able to tell you what you can eat, drink, smoke, or marry, or what kind of gun you can own. We don't want to be snooped on by an all-knowing big brother government. That is the essence of liberty. The Republican Party has become both a party of big government but also an authoritarian party that would tell us how to live…
The Libertarian Party stands for both economic and personal freedom. Libertarians oppose spending, debt, taxes, big government, and costly foreign wars where our national interests are not clear. We support a woman's right to choose an abortion, gay marriage equality, and the legalization of marijuana.
The Ron Paul revolution shows me a Libertarian moment is coming. It will gather momentum in 2012 and most likely manifest itself in 2016. Ron Paul's incredibly strong support among young voters is the tip-off. American voters have never been offered a presidential candidate who took conservative positions on fiscal issues like spending, debt, and taxes, while taking freedom-based (i.e. liberal) positions on choice, gay marriage, and drug-law reform. This is clearly where a majority of Americans are.
Stone apparently makes no distinction between the constitutionalist libertarian, Dr. Ron Paul, who would leave social and moral issues to the states, and those more liberal libertarians adamantly opposed to any regulation of personal behavior, even at the local level.

From the Topeka Capital- Journal

Letter: Go Libertarian

Posted: March 20, 2012 - 9:06pm  Are you less than thrilled with the presidential candidates being put forward by the two major political parties? Are you tired of settling for the least objectionable choice to lead our nation?

Consider attending the Libertarian Party of Kansas’ state convention Saturday in Kansas City, Mo. All of the Libertarian presidential candidates will be there for a spirited debate. Candidates include former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson, Jim Burns, Roger Gary, Carl Person, Bill Still, R. J. Harris and R. Lee Wrights.

The event is a joint state convention with the Libertarian Party of Missouri and will include a school for candidates running for public office, the selection by the state parties of candidates for local public office and the selection of delegates to the national convention in May. Jobs!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 21th, 2012
LP Chair to Washington- Stop Destroying Jobs So The Economy Can Grow

WASHINGTON: Libertarian National Chair, Mark Hinkle, released the following statement today:
“The Obama administration is crowing about a drop in the unemployment rate to 8.3% in February 2012. Unfortunately, a large part of the decline since the 10.0% peak reached earlier in his term is the result of people who have given up looking for work. In fact, the percentage of working-age Americans currently unemployed stands at 36.3%, the highest rate of his administration and the worst since the 1980s.
“Libertarians running for local, state and federal offices offer several proposals that can help end what is becoming a permanent disaster for the economy. At the state and local levels occupational licensing laws, zoning and building codes block tens of millions from entering or changing professions and from starting their own small businesses. Regulation, in general, is a job killer: the states with the heaviest regulatory burdens are usually the ones with the highest unemployment rates.
“But Washington, DC is the job-killing champion. The current collapse in employment, especially among minorities and younger potential workers, coincided with the ratcheting up of the federal minimum wage by more than 40% in 3 steps in the summers of 2007, 2008, and 2009. It’s hardly surprising that the unemployment rate, after steadily dropping for 4 years, bottomed at 4.4% in the spring of 2007, just before the first increase, and peaked at 10.0% in the fall of 2009, shortly after the final one.
“The real problem is that the true minimum wage is $0.00, the amount you make when you don’t have a job. Increasing the minimum wage did NOT give everybody a 40% raise; instead, it threw millions of workers into unemployment. The employer health insurance mandate in ObamaCare will probably do the same -- which may be why that mandate is scheduled to go into effect AFTER the presidential election.
“It is enough to make me scream ‘Don’t just do something, sit there!’ Given enough time and a stable legal environment, the economy has a chance to start growing again. And with some Libertarians in office, maybe we can repeal some of these laws and grow even faster.”

I'm heartened that I received responses from so many of you!  I especially want to thank the 1,556 of you so far that have invested considerable time to share your thoughts and invaluable advice.
In your comments I've already found many great suggestions for improvement.

In the coming days I will be assembling all of your ideas for the entire Platform Committee, and I believe your suggestions have the potential to improve our Party's platform.

If you haven't yet participated, please complete this questionnaire before you do anything else, before you read another e-mail message.

Before long, I'll need to close the door to the questionnaire so the committee will have sufficient time to consider your comments.

With a focus on building grassroots movements nationally, Austin used his previous experience in the entertainment business to produce activism politically in support of Presidential Candidate Ron Paul. Good Deals For The National Convention!

Message to You from David Bergland, 1984 Libertarian Presidential Candidate, Author, Libertarianism in One Lesson

Dear Fellow Libertarian,
I want to meet you. At this Libertarian National Convention Homecoming and Reunion May 2 to 6.
You are the main reason I'm coming to this Libertarian National Convention.
I want to listen to you. To hear what you think and feel about liberty and the Libertarian Party.
I have some questions that only you can answer.
What do you want for the Libertarian Party this year?
How do you feel about the LP right now?
Is it doing what you hoped it would when you joined?
Is it doing what you think it ought to?
Is it moving in the right direction - or is it off course?
What is the Libertarian Party doing right? What's it doing wrong?
If you could change anything that the Libertarian Party is saying or
doing, what would you change?
Will you please meet me at the Libertarian National Convention?
There's less than 7 weeks until it begins.
Will you take just 6 minutes to read your Invitation below - to see exactly what
the Convention is offering you? To see what your choices are?
Will you please come?
Yours for Liberty,

TANSTAAFL Package

"TANSTAAFL" is the minimum required payment for Delegates and Alternates
to enter the Convention to participate in Libertarian Party business, and in Libertarian Delegate meetings and activities.

"TANSTAAFL" is longtime libertarian acronym, which
means:
"There Ain't No Such Thing As A Free Lunch"

Some Libertarian Delegates want to attend only business sessions. They
should NOT be required to buy more expensive Convention Packages just to
be a Delegate at the Libertarian National Convention.

TANSTAAFL Package allows these to pay only the cost of what they choose.

Each attendee must pay his share of the basic costs of putting on this
Libertarian National Convention. The costs of the meeting rooms, the tables
and chairs, audio-visual systems, LP support staff, Parliamentarian, printing
and shipping materials, and so forth for several days of Libertarian Party
National business.

These costs are included in the Gold, Silver, Bronze, and TANSTAAFL
Convention Packages.

Paying Delegates and Attendees will NOT be forced to pay the Convention
costs of 'Free Riders.'
